Suprascapular Nerve Block
Pain Treatment Procedure
Suprascapular Nerve Block
A suprascapular nerve block (SSNB) is a minimally invasive injection used to calm the suprascapular nerve, which is one of the primary nerves that carries pain signals from your shoulder joints and muscles to your brain.[1] Blocking these pain messages can reduce discomfort, improve mobility and get you back to the activities you love.[2]
SSNBs may also be referred to as shoulder blocks and are recommended when shoulder pain hasn’t improved from conventional treatments, such as rest, medication, or physical therapy.[3] These shoulder nerve blocks are a valuable tool for chronic and post-surgical pain.[4]
How Suprascapular Nerve Blockades Work
During the procedure, your pain specialist carefully injects a small amount of local anesthetic combined with a steroid near the suprascapular nerve at the back of your shoulder. [5] The injection is usually guided by ultrasound or fluoroscopy for accuracy and safety, and to avoid the phrenic nerve, which is responsible for breathing. [5]
The anesthetic works to numb the nerve and interrupt pain signals, while the steroid helps calm inflammation around the shoulder joint. Many patients experience relief within minutes to hours, although longer-lasting results may develop over several days as inflammation subsides. [6;7]
Depending on the cause of your shoulder pain, the effects of an SSNB may last for weeks to months. Repeat injections or combining the block with physical therapy can extend and enhance results. [8;6]
Conditions Treated with a Suprascapular Shoulder Block
SSNBs are used to treat chronic, acute and postoperative shoulder pain.[6] Shoulder pain can limit your daily life, but the suprascapular block can help with:
- Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) [6]
- Rheumatoid arthritis [6]
- Rotator cuff tendonitis [6]
- Inflammatory arthritis [6]
- Bursitis [6]
- Shoulder trauma or injury [2]
- Post-stroke pain syndrome [2]
- Chronic shoulder pain from nerve irritation or inflammation [2]
Your pain specialist may also use an SSNB as a diagnostic tool to confirm that the suprascapular nerve is contributing to your pain.[9]
Benefits of Suprascapular Blockades
Living with shoulder pain can feel exhausting and frustrating. A suprascapular nerve block offers more than just short-term relief; it can be part of a larger plan to restore comfort and function. Some of the benefits include:
- Targeted Relief: Unlike oral pain medications, SSNBs act directly on the nerve responsible for your pain [1]
- Quick Results: Many patients notice improvement within hours, helping you move more freely and sleep better [6]
- Reduced Reliance on Medications: Nerve blocks can lower your need for opioids or daily pain medicine [6]
- Minimally Invasive: The procedure is outpatient, with no surgery or stitches required [7]
- Improved Mobility and Function: By reducing pain, SSNBs can help you get more out of physical therapy and return to daily activities [4]
- Diagnostic Insight: If your pain improves after the injection, your provider can confirm the suprascapular nerve is the culprit [9]
Consult a Suprascapular Nerve Block Pain Specialist for Pain Management
Shoulder pain can affect your daily life, from getting dressed to reaching overhead or even sleeping comfortably. You may be a good candidate for a shoulder nerve block if the pain hasn’t improved with conventional treatment. If your pain specialist confirms the suprascapular is responsible for your nerve-related shoulder pain, this procedure may be an excellent addition to your pain management plan.
For best results, SSNBs are often part of a multidisciplinary and whole-body approach to pain management. Your pain doctor will combine your injection with physical or occupational therapy, targeted exercises, lifestyle changes and other treatments that support healing.
Shoulder pain doesn’t have to stop you from living a whole life. Talk to your pain management physician to find out if a suprascapular nerve block could be the long-term relief your shoulder needs.
