Dr. Edward M. Podgorski III, MD, is a distinguished interventional pain medicine physician, dual board-certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine subspecializing in oncology pain management and intrathecal drug delivery. He founded Hawthorne Oncology Pain Experts (HOPE) with the mission to restore quality of life for patients battling cancer-related pain, complex chronic pain, and spasticity. His dedication to alleviating suffering was inspired by patients during his volunteer work at a hospice in Philadelphia, where he witnessed the profound impact of effective pain management on cancer patients.
Dr. Podgorski’s academic journey began at Jefferson Medical College (now Sidney Kimmel Medical College) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed his internal medicine internship at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts, followed by an anesthesiology residency at the University of Miami in Florida. He further specialized by undertaking a pain medicine fellowship at the nation’s number one cancer center MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
In addition to his clinical contributions, Dr. Podgorski serves as the co-chair of the Cancer Pain and Pain Pump Committee for the American Society of Pain and Neuroscience (ASPN) CARES, demonstrating his leadership in advancing pain management practices. He is also a Cancer Pain and Palliative Care Section Reviewer for the Pain Medicine Journal and holds a leadership role in the Foundation of Implantable Drug Delivery Systems (FIDDS). Additionally, he serves as a speaker at multiple conferences, including the North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS) and the World Academy of Pain Medicine United (WAPMU).
Dr. Podgorski’s scholarly work encompasses a range of publications, including journal articles, book chapters, and guideline papers. Beyond his clinical and research endeavors, Dr. Podgorski is committed to education, serving as a faculty member responsible for training fellows and physicians in intrathecal drug delivery techniques. His expertise in this area is further evidenced by his comprehensive guide on pain pumps, aimed at enhancing understanding and application of this treatment modality.
